SEMEFAB’s MEM2 Fab becomes operational
Development and Volume Business Models Offer Seamless Transition for Commercialisation
GLENROTHES, SCOTLAND, UK, November 20, 2009 – Semefab (Scotland) Ltd., a leading, independent wafer fab foundry with an impressive track record of process development, induction and fabrication of MEMS, CMOS and ASIC technologies, today announced that its MEMS2 fab is now fully operational.
The MEMS2 fab has been rebuilt, expanded and operates to class 100 in all fabrication bays, with Photolithography operating at class 10. Semefab contracted Merit Merrell Technology to build its world-class cleanroom and subsequently contracted Merit to complete the hook-up of all fabrication tools in the MEMS2 fab.
Semefab’s MEMS2 fab, coupled with its CMOS1 fab, are at the forefront of the UK’s strategy to establish a world-class fabrication operation to commercialise research & development outcomes from industry and academia. With a combined £6.6 million capital investment from Scottish Enterprise and the Technology Strategy Board, Semefab has created a 0.5 micron capable MEMS fabrication facility.
Semefab provides industry and academia with a turnkey commercialisation solution.
MEMS design services are offered in partnership with iSLI and therefore customer’s projects can progress from concept to volume under one roof.
With a device structure as the outcome from iSLI, Semefab develops a process using its MNT development model and can fulfil feasibility, proof of concept, or prototype samples dependent on the customer’s needs.
Once the structure fabricated by Semefab fulfils the customer’s specification, Semefab can seamlessly transition the project from development to volume eliminating any headaches typically experienced when moving from laboratory to volume.
Semefab’s MNT model accelerates the development process and breaks down barriers to market entry and time to market.
Ian McNaught, MEMS Business Manager for Semefab (Scotland) Ltd said:
“The contract to rebuild and expand Semefab’s MEMS2 fab was critical to our operation. Semefab considered four tenders very carefully before awarding the contract to Merit Merrell Technology. Throughout the build Merit Merrell Technology managed the project in a very professional manner and provided accurate routine updates to the Semefab team. Testimony to Merit Merrell’s expertise and professionalism, Semefab’s MEMS2 fab was delivered on-budget and on time.”
