Semefab shortlisted for Fife Business Awards 2022

Semefab has been shortlisted as a finalist for this year’s Fife Business Awards in the “School Partnership Award” category.

Semefab are long standing supporters of the Fife Business Awards, having sponsored various categories over the years. We were also winners in 2016 of the “Best Performing Business (over 50 employees) Award”.

Since its launch in 2019, in memory of our late Dr John Bruce who was a founder of Semefab in 1986, the company has awarded its 'Dr John Bruce Memorial Awards' to youngsters from Glenrothes, Auchmuty and Glenwood High Schools. Each school selects a winner, based on grades and achievements in STEM subjects – (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) – from S4 and S6 plus a runner up for each of the years. These awards are an exciting new initiative to celebrate and award students who have excelled in 4th and 6th year STEM subjects.

Recently, Semefab has developed a close working partnership with Auchmuty High School in Glenrothes. With the help of Christopher Deaves, Head of the school's Science Department, we have sponsored 2 exciting projects which we hope will, not only help students in their everyday classroom environment but also give them confidence in team building and problem solving.

Project 1
The first project was a donation from Semefab of five Huion graphics tablets to the school’s Maths Department. These tablets allow staff to create content for pupils and for pupils to share solutions on screen which can then be discussed to improve understanding of concepts.

Project 2
The second project involved Semefab sponsoring the school to enter the FIRST LEGO League Challenge which was run by the school’s Technical Department. https://www.firstlegoleague.org/ This is a global challenge open to 9–16 year olds with the aim of “Inspiring Youth through hands on STEM learning and encouraging interest in real world themes to develop key employability skills that are crucial for life and future careers.

George Smith, Production Manager at Semefab commented on the 2 projects saying, “The most satisfying thing about the STEM collaboration with the schools is seeing the engagement of the teachers and pupils with Semefab. During the 2 years we’ve been running the awards we have had great feedback from the teachers and they are so grateful for our help. As part of the Awards prize we gave the 6th year Winners and Runners Up the opportunity to work at Semefab on a summer placement”.

Ciara McCulloch
Ciara works as a part time Trainee Technician at Semefab and was Auchmuty High School Runner Up in the 2021 Awards. Ciara said, “My favourite part was getting some 'hands-on' experience with things I had been learning about in school and being able to apply the knowledge and learn about how it’s done in practice”.

Andrew Bell, Production Supervisor and Semefab STEM Ambassador
Andrew said of the students’ experience at Semefab, “The knowledge and experience they gain at Semefab, plus the diverse team of people they work with, makes working here really interesting and exciting. It also helps the local and wider community get a better understanding of what Semefab does.”

This year's awards ceremony will be held at the Rothes Halls, Glenrothes in May 2022. https://www.fifechamber.co.uk/fife-business-awards
