 The Company

Founded in 1986, Semefab has an impressive track record of process development, induction and fabrication of custom Silicon based MEMS, CMOS and ASIC technologies, both for established and start up companies who rank innovation, cost effectiveness and quality high on their list of priorities.

Semefab (Scotland) Ltd. fosters a philosophy of teamwork and achievement throughout all organisational disciplines and this is reflected in our Investor in People accreditation. Semefab presently employees 88 people in Glenrothes, Scotland, UK.

 

 

 The Team

Allan James

Allan James
Joint Managing Director

 

Allan co-founded Semefab in 1986 and is both a joint Managing Director of Semefab and Chairman of the parent company, Semelab.

Allan is also a co-founder and director of Detector and Sensor Technologies Ltd. and is an experienced semiconductor engineer and entrepreneur well versed in managing companies with high capitally intensive asset bases. Allan is a board member of both the Scottish Micro and Opto Electronics Team (MOET) and the Scottish Consortium for Integrated Microphotonics (SCIMPS).

Allan’s career spans semiconductor process development at Mullard, production engineering at ITT Corporation, technology development & transfer at GEC & Marconi and operations management at General Instruments. When General Instruments retrenched to the USA in 1985, Allan and a nucleus of colleagues founded Semefab in the ‘redundant’ semiconductor plant with the assistance of Semelab Plc.

Allan received a 2.1 Honours degree in Physics from Southampton University (1973).

John Bruce

Joint Managing Director

 

 

John co-founded Semefab in 1986 and is a joint Managing Director of Semefab. John is also co-founder and director of Detector and Sensor Technologies Ltd.

John has held several positions within Semefab encompassing all aspects of technology development, operations and quality and has been responsible for the development of Semefab’s diverse portfolio of in house semiconductor products and technologies, ranging from discrete bipolar, Mosfet power devices and PiN diodes to CMOS and Optocmos products.  John has managed numerous technology transfers from a wide variety of customers and has the combined responsibility for both Technology and Operations at Semefab.

Prior to forming Semefab, John worked at General Instrument Microelectronics, initially in process development and laterally as section head of device and yield engineering.

John received a BSc in Chemistry (1979) and a PhD in Solid State Diffusion Processes (1981) from Strathclyde University.

 

Ian McNaught

Ian F. McNaught
MEMS Business Manager

 

Ian joined Semefab in 2006 with global responsibility for the sales, profit+loss, marketing and commercialisation of MEMS. This remit includes ownership of the SemeMEMS strategy, promotion of Semefab as the UK primary wafer fab node for micro and nanotechnology and execution of the £13.2m SemeMEMS investment, partly funded by Scottish Enterprise and the DTI.

Previous to Semefab Ian held positions of Commercial Director at MBA Ltd., European Operations Manager at Kulicke & Soffa, UK Operations Manager at BUSCH Semicon, Global Account Manager at LEYBOLD Vacuum, Engineering Team Leader at Freescale Semiconductors and Europe North Field Support Co-ordinator at Novellus Systems.
Ian has created and managed two SME start-ups and has been a Director, and Vice-Chairman, of the Scottish Semiconductor Supplier Forum.

Ian received an MBA from the University of Paisley (2005) and an HND in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from Glasgow Caledonia University (1989).

Linda Cowan

Finance & Purchasing Manager

 

Linda joined Semefab in 1997 as Accounts Supervisor having previously been responsible for the accounting, purchasing and human resource functions at Levenmouth Printers.
In 2000 Linda was promoted to Finance manager. In 2002, purchasing was added to her responsibilities and managerial role.

Linda is a fully qualified ACCA Chartered Accountant (2005) and has 17 years of accounting experience in the manufacturing industry.

Pauline Martin

Human Resources Manager

 

Pauline joined Semefab during 2007 with responsibility for human resources. A Licenciate member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development, Pauline is a generalist HR professional covering recruitment and selection, learning and development and employment law, as well as providing general advice across the entire HR spectrum.

Pauline's main professional interests lie in the design, development and implementation of training courses. She has also enjoyed the challenge of working closely with trade unions. With a mainly manufacturing background, Pauline's career spans public sector finance, IT support at Scottish Hydro Electric and Business Management of an IT & Personnel Development training company. Whilst managing this business, through her involvement with 'Investors in People', she became interested in HR and the positive changes it can bring to both companies and employees.

 

Shona Ray

Shona Ray
Process Development Manager

 

Shona joined Semefab in 1997 as a graduate process engineer with primary responsibility in Photo & Etch and secondary responsibility in Diffusion & Implant. Shona transferred to process development in 2003 and was promoted to process development manager during 2004.

Shona received a BSc(Hons) in Applied Physics from Robert Gordon University (1997) and is presently studying towards an MSc in Semiconductor Processing Technology, scheduled to graduate in 2009.

Ian Deviny

Ian Deviny
Process Engineering Manager

 

Ian joined Semefab in 2003 with responsibility for the process engineering team responsible for new process capability introduction, process control of production yields, yield improvement and cost reduction.

Ian’s career spans product engineering at GEC, product and test management at Marconi Devices, product engineering management at Anamartic and yield engineering management & wafer fab engineering management at Plessey Semiconductors. Ian has managed teams working on NMOS, PMOS, CMOS gate arrays, wafer scale DRAM technologies and has received a Certificate of Quality Engineering from the American Society of Quality Control.

Ian received an Honours degree in Physics from the Royal College of Science, Imperial College University of London (1977).

Brian Koczubik

Brian Koczubik
Equipment & Facilities Manager

 

Brian joined Semefab in 1998 as equipment engineering manager and was subsequently promoted to Equipment & Facilities Engineering manager with responsibility for equipment, facilities and environmental engineering an a supervisory Health & Safety function.

Brian’s career spans 22 years in the semiconductor industry encompassing equipment, facilities and project management.  (temporary summary).

Bruce Duckworth

Bruce Duckworth
Manufacturing Manager

 

Bruce joined Semefab in 1993 and has responsibility for manufacturing operations in both the fab1 CMOS line and the fab 2 MEMS line.

Bruce has worked in the semiconductor industry since 1966 fulfilling management roles in research and development, quality control and manufacturing, both at Northern Telecom and Semefab.

George Smith

George Smith
Fab 1 Production Manager

 

George joined Semefab in 2003 with responsibility for Probe and Test co-ordination.
Previously George was Process Leader at Richmand Engineering and Team Leader at Strand Lighting.

During 2007 George was promoted to Fab 1 Production Manager.

Alan Forsyth

Product & Test Manager

 

Alan joined Semefab in 1999 with the responsibility of product and device engineering including yield, parametric testing, product development and test/probe production activity.

Alan’s career spans positions of Product Engineer at National Semiconductor & DEC and Device Engineer at Seagate Microelectronics with experience in failure analysis, parametric testing, WLR, process integration and project management.

Alan received a BEng in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from Glasgow University (1989).

Stephen Young

Stephen Young
Quality Assurance Manager

 

Stephen joined Semefab in 2000 as a member of the product assurance / qualification team and was promoted to Quality Assurance Manager in 2005.
Stephen managed the transition to ISO9001:2000 and has been key in developing effective business processes and driving continuous improvement.

Prior to Semefab, Stephen accumulated 14 years experience in Quality Assurance Engineering supporting product assurance programs in diverse electronic industries including semiconductors, disk drives and precision coaxial cable assemblies supplying commercial, military and European Space Agency markets.

Stephen is now embarking on a project of 5S implementation.

Paul Lawson

IT Manager

 

Paul joined Semefab in 1993 as a Production Assistant and now manages Production Control, Information Technology and Shipping.

Paul received a Diploma in Production & Inventory Management from the Institute of Operations Management (1997).

Peter Gorniak

Peter Gorniak
Sales Marketing Executive

 

Peter joined Semefab in 1999 as Business Development Executive with key responsibility for promoting Semefab in the European market, specifically in the German speaking area of central Europe.

Peter started his career at Hughes Microelectronics in Glenrothes as a process development engineer and moved into sales to become the sales manager for Germany with a sales office in Munich. He then progressed into the sales of design software and systems, moving to Germany in 1986.
Peter spent 13 years in Germany working for Marconi, Preussag and System Sensor before moving into the software industry.

He returned to Scotland, Glenrothes to join Semefab in 1999. Peter's tri-lingual capabilities coupled with his extensive experience in Europe and MSc from Glasgow University in the Physical Optical and Electronic properties of Amorphous Silicon, make him an ideal candidate for Semefab's expansion into the European market.

Nina Ni

Nina Ni
Sales Marketing Executive

 

Nina (Chinese name: Duan Ni) joined Semefab in 2005 with responsibility for our far-east Asian market research and development. Her territories are China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan & Indonesia.

Prior to Semefab, Nina used to be a University Lecturer, Senior Consultant and Director of her own consulting company in Hangzhou, China. Nina used to publish lots of articles in newspapers, magazines and books in Beijing and Hong Kong. The topics covered many of China's economic reforms and cultural changes.

Nina earned her Bachelor's degree in Philosophy in Beijing in 1984 and her MBA degree in Germany in 2002.

Nina's unique bilingual and bi-cultural background strongly assists Semefab in the rapidly expanding far-eastern market.
